Liveblog: Commencement Ceremony
Written November 4th, 2007 by Aaron HolbrookThe commencement ceremony’s just started and they still don’t have wifi working in here. *Sigh* you’d think for a hotel this large, they’d offer free wifi. Unfortunately that’s not the case. Fortunately I come prepared with my handy dandy sprint card.
Here come the Leadership Awards.
They’re now asking some questions to the audience.
The first is: “What is the single most important thing on a web site?”
The audience almost unanimously agreed that it was ‘ease of navigation’. Would you agree with this assessment or not? I personally think logical navigation and the look and feel are pretty evenly weighted and are both important.
Another question: “How important is interactivity on a site?”
The audience was split between very important and important.
Battery’s about dead, I’ll be writing more later.

I agree that the look and feel are very important, and that the content is the most important, in general. Right now the average usability of a healthcare site is very low, and institutions are finally coming around. This likely influenced that informal voting. By choosing navigation, I think they were admitting that in that area the most work is needed.
The best content in the world is no good if you can’t find it. It’s a tripod – navigation (usability), design, and content.

I don’t think it’s any surprise that navigation is, in general, lacking in usability on healthcare Web sites. Some of this is due to the inability to integrate health content into our regular service line content. This will continue to be a challenge as long as we cannot afford systems that will integrate this adequately, have very small Web teams, and/or aren’t Ed Bennett.
